If you’re set to finish University this year – congratulations! You’ve spent years studying for your degree and it’s now time to get out there and find a graduate job.

You may have already prepared your CV and cover letter. If so, that’s great. But now it’s time to consider how you’re going to look for relevant jobs.

To help you out, this article explain several ways you can find a graduate job, so you can get started right away.

Word of mouth

That old saying ‘it’s not what you know, but who you know’ is often true in the working world. So if you have any great contacts out there that can connect you with an awesome graduate job – tap into them!

It might be someone you already know, or perhaps they can put you in touch with someone that they’re connected with. Either way, using word of mouth to find a graduate job is a strategy that can pay off. So long as you’re persistent and grateful!

Job boards

Naturally, we’re rather biased when it comes to this one. But you can’t underestimate the power of a job board in helping you find a graduate job.

Job boards, like CV-Library, host thousands of jobs from employers and recruitment agencies across the country. All you need to do is register your CV and you can start searching for relevant jobs. Plus, once your CV is in the database, employers can start contacting you about opportunities.

So, whether you’re keen to kickstart your career in engineering, or education, generalist job boards are useful as they cover all industries.

Social media

Today’s employers understand that graduates are frequent users of social media. As such, more companies are using platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to target people that they think would be right for their company.

With this in mind, make sure you following relevant hashtags, like #jobs, #graduatejobs and so on. This means you’ll never miss out on a role that’s right for you.

Alongside this, make sure you sign up to professional networking sites like LinkedIn. This is a great platform for connecting with potential employers and be sure to follow the companies you’re interested in working for to keep an eye out for job updates.

University

Have you been down to your university’s career advice centre yet? If not, it may be worth paying them a visit. Universities are usually connected with key employers either in the city they’re located in or the wider country. So, you never know what jobs they could put in front of you.

Be sure to bring a copy of your CV along just in case and have an idea of the type of job you want to go into. While they’re there to help you think about your career – don’t go in blind. Have an idea of what interests you and you’ll have a much more productive conversation.

Careers fairs

Another great way to find a graduate job is to attend relevant careers fairs. Whether these are generic or graduate focussed, they’re great for getting in front of the right people and discussing potential career opportunities at their company.

If you do choose this method, definitely make sure you go looking and feeling the part. Dress smart and bring with you several copies of your CV. You can then work the room and hand these out to any companies that you like the look of.

If you’re nervous about this approach – take someone with you! And remember, everyone is the same boat as you.

Ready to find a graduate job?

Looking for a graduate job may seem like a stressful process. After all, you’re fresh out of university and under pressure to start earning money. But it’s actually a lot easier than you think. So long as you use the right tools, of course!

Whether you’re tapping into your network through word of mouth, looking online via job boards and social media, or speaking to employers through your university and careers fairs, there’s plenty of options available to you.

So pick what feels right for you, or better still, use a combination of the above! The more effort you put in, the more likely you are to find the right opportunity. Good luck!
